You may give them your love

  but not your thoughts  -

For they love their own thoughts.

  You may house their bodies

           but not their souls.

          For their souls dwell

  in the land of tomorrow,

 which you cannot visit,

 not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them,

but seek not to make them like you.

   For life goes not backward

nor tarries with yesterday -

            Be like the archer

      who holds the bow steady

and guides the arrow into the air,

and know you can never see where it lands.

by Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet (1883-1931)

Wisdom and truth expressed so eloquently for you the parent or adult child to ponder.
